Acoustic guitars are very near and dear to me. I have sold a number of them, built more of them than I can remember, and play at least one or two of them every day. You govern just how the guitar volume and tone each guitar will have by selection of special wood species, and variations in the guitar body size and depth.
The Acoustic is Very Popular
It is one of the most popular guitars of all time, and it matters not if you call it a steel string, flattop or bluegrass guitar. C.F. Martin, Gibson, Gretsch and Epiphone have led the factory produced acoustic guitar market for countless years. All of these manufacturers have been around for a long time. So if you are shopping for a new acoustic guitar, be sure to keep these companies at the top of your list.
Even though the American instrument makers stayed comparatively strong over the years, in the 1960's the Japanese gained a foothold in the lower end acoustic guitar market. These were basically considered 'starter' guitars and I sold my share of them to my guitar students during this period as well. They were rather durable, economical, as sounded okay.
Japanese Instruments
In the early years of Japanese guitar construction, the entire guitar was constructed of plywood, including the top. As a result of that construction method, the guitars had quite a bit of durability. Often they came delivered with a very high string action and they had to have adjustments before they were in a playable condition. When my students asked me for advice to buy an acoustic guitar I would point them toward Yamaha guitars, Alvarez Guitars and Takamine Guitars.
I can hardly believe how much the Japanese guitar market has enhanced the quality of their instruments in recent years. They now have great setup, use solid wood on their instruments, and they are using superior building techniques. They even have nice intermediate and advanced level guitars of fine quality, so don't overlook them when you buy an acoustic guitar.
The American Guitar Market During the 60's and 70's
Shortly after the foreign guitar market took hold in the U.S., the American guitar makers lost their focus, and in order to compete with these lower cost instruments they lowered their production standards. So, combined with lower quality and higher price, the American guitar market was repeatedly overlooked by prospective buyers.
The Resurgence of the American Guitar Makers
Gibson and C.F. Martin, to name a few American makers, thankfully regained their focus to produce fine instruments once again. The guitars that they produced in the 1980's and 1990's again had the same quality standards as they did before the influx of foreign instruments. They have even introduced models that reflect the same construction strategies and materials of their pre-war instruments that made them famous.
Acoustic Guitar Options
When shopping for an acoustic guitar, you are faced with many options and variations, such as:
Single Cutaway Option: The primary purpose of this option is to allow the guitarist access to the higher frets of the guitar by 'cutting away' the body of the guitar.
12 Fret Necks or 14 Fret Neck: This selection that is available on many guitar models refers to the fret number with which the guitar neck joins the guitar body.
Body Size Variations: Body sizes range in size for the small 0, 00 and 000, or concert size guitars to the famous dreadnought and finally the big Jumbo sized guitars.
Top Bracing Patterns: Bracing variations can range from the standard X bracing, to forward shifted bracing, and finally custom scalloped bracing.
Electronics: This option is either standard issue or more often an option that is available to you. Your guitar can come equipped with a great acoustic pickup and preamp configuration.
Wood Selections: These options include High Pressure Laminates for lower priced guitars to an amazing array of exotic and domestic hardwoods for the higher priced instruments.
Certainly with all of these alternatives that are now available to the prospective guitarist, there will certainly be many acoustic guitars that will match your accomplishment level, budget constraints and picking style.
