When is it Appropriate to Ask Help through Therapy
One must never disregard one’s psychological health because it is part and parcel of a person’s comfort in that one cannot be truly considered healthy unless he also is healthy emotionally and mentally, as humanistic therapy reports emphasizes. Sand Tray Therapy can help people reconnect to who they really are. A person is the sum of all of his parts, and is not just made up of purely how physically healthy he is or how mentally and emotionally healthy he is. In this way, many people understand that sometimes, going to therapy can be a very wise choice; especially if it relates to issues that are not easy to resolve, such as being raped, or suffering a loss.
People don’t normally consult the therapist right away when they feel that there are issues they cannot resolve unaccompanied; a lot of people bear a long process of evaluating their other options before actually seeking help. He would look for it and long for it until he finds it; sometimes there are hindrances between man and his goal for self-fulfillment and at times, its when dealing with these hindrances that life gets truly intricate.
Therapists are not sounding boards that you can just confide in, but they surely make confiding issues easier than telling family and friends. You’ve probably noticed before that sometimes a problem looks intractable until you take the time to say it out loud to somebody else, and then it doesn’t seem so intolerable to survive anymore. While children have the preference of play therapy as a means of being able to tackle their crisis through play, and as a means of having an adult interpret their needs through observation, adults don’t usually go to play therapy. Of course, one can always confide in one’s family and friends, but there’s something consoling about talking to a therapist. Children aren’t big on verbalizing their sentiments simply because they haven’t reached that stage where they can do some self-examination and evaluation, unlike adults.
Having helpful conversations with your therapist can really make a big difference in your development or quest for self-fulfillment. Therapists take this one step further and are able to help you change some things in your point of view or in your life that will make your recovery faster and more effective. A person who has been sexually harassed might find herself more low and deserted unless she talks about it; people who endure sexual assault may be battling with thoughts that they cannot say to family and friends.
Much of the comfort that consulting an expert has also comes from the thought that they’ve already talked to a lot of other people, with issues that are maybe more serious than yours, so you won’t feel self-conscious revealing your story. Therapists are trained to help you realize what you need to change in your life and your practice in order to make positive changes that will affect your development.
What therapists can’t do, however, is to help you out if your trouble has something to do with your physical health; so it’s important to check with your physician first and take several tests to confirm that you are physically fit. Sometimes hormonal imbalances and other types of illnesses manifest themselves through symptoms that are close to psychological misery such as depression. Therapists are not trained to deal with health issues that have something to do with your physical structure.
Once your physician offers you a clean bill of health, then you can progress and consult with a therapist on the things that are bothering you.
