Piano is a beautiful instrument to listen to, especially when played in a professional manner. That's where the trouble starts. It needs to be played well; that takes time to learn, and that means...oh no, practice. Every parent that ever paid for a piano lesson knows how hard it is to get a kid to actually practice the piano lesson. However, it is a necessary 'evil' if you want to become proficient at the instrument.
Many parents wonder how old a child must be to begin learning the piano. Closely related is "how good can I expect my child to become"? We now realize that talent and education have a direct correlation. It's not the amount of innate talent then that determines the height to which a great pianist can climb. Rather, it is the age at which he or she starts. Earlier seems to be better. Not to say that an adult can't learn to play piano, but the ability to translate that instruction into highly technical accomplishment is diminished somewhat. Nerve growth slows as we age. That inhibits the ability to play.
It is known that the brain is stimulated by sound. As a baby grows, sound aids in brain development. Therefore, it is theorized, that exposure to music from birth or even prenatal can accelerate that brain development. This in turn may help when the child finally sits down at the piano to play his or her first note. The older classical music such as Beethoven or Bach offer more basic chord structures and less dissonance. These may be more appropriate for babies. As children age, you can introduce more contemporary music styles.
Children as young as age 4 can begin to take some music education. While their hands may not be large enough to actually play the piano, they can become acquainted with it's layout, and they can begin to understand how to read music. Up through age 12, children can take advantage of the tremendous brain development that naturally occurs. If they are diligent, even a person who would not have had a natural bent toward music can become amazingly accomplished at the piano or any other instrument.
Teenagers still have a wonderful opportunity of becoming proficient at playing the piano at the highest levels. Perhaps they won't become the greatest pianist in the world, but who really cares. If they love music, and work hard at it, this group will go far. However, to become excellent, they must love the piano. If that love is not there, it cannot be forced upon them. As a parent, you can only provide encouragement and support for that interest. So, do be sure to offer those things if your child is interested.
One of the keys to learning piano is to have a great piano teacher. Not all instructors are the same. The methods differ, The structure of the lessons differ. The personalities differ. Don't think that the best teacher is the one who plays the best either. Yes, it is necessary to play well to be a good piano instructor, but remember the old adage "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." There is a certain amount of logic and wisdom in those words. Just pay attention to what your child is telling you about the teacher. Also, pay attention to the music being learned. Everyone starts out with primarily the same simple tunes, but kids and especially teens tire of those quickly. They want to learn things that are contemporary in most cases. I would recommend that you find an instructor that allows for that. It keeps the interest level high, and that in turn should translate into more practice time. And we all know that practice makes perfect. Well maybe not perfect, but practice is the only way to get good at the piano.
Finding that great piano teacher may be a bit of process. You can search online in your city for an instructor. For instance if you lived in Milwaukee, you might search for Milwaukee piano teacher. Depending on your area, you might find a few dozen people willing to teach piano. If you can, get a personal recommendation from someone you know and whose opinion you trust. You might visit a piano store and ask them who they recommend. Many stores offer lessons, and that may well be a great place to start. However, you want to keep an eye and an ear on things, and if your child is losing interest despite your persuasive encouragement, it might be time to switch instructors.
