This article will discuss piano improvisation lessons and 3 tips of how to master the techniques of improvisation and get the most out of the lessons that you take. Regardless of the type of lessons that you take or how often, the three tips below will help you use what you learn and allow you to improvise music often much faster than you might have thought possible.
1. Practice: It goes without saying that in order to improve on a skill, practice is necessary. Yet many people expect to master something without doing the necessary leg work. Improvisation is no different than learning how to read or how to play a Bach perfectly. Without practice, improvement simply will not happen.
2. Small Sections: It really helps when learning new things to break them up into smaller pieces. It is easier for your brain and your fingers to grasp a new concept and it will cut your learning time in half by doing so. The best method is to choose a new aspect of improvisation to learn, like scales or transposing and completely focus on that method until you have a firm grasp of it and only then moving on to learning the next steps.
3. Repetition: As with practice, repetition is the next best way to learn something quickly. Going over something again and again will naturally get that skill embedded into your memory and your fingers so the next time you do something it comes without thought. As natural as breathing, this should be your goal before moving on to learning something new. Once you have repeated something enough and can do it in your sleep, you are ready to move on.
