What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?
I just finished watching a concert video of Celtic Woman, and in the interviews, Mairead Nesbitt refers to playing the violin, and playing the fiddle, as two different instruments. But during the concert, she plays the same instrument in a serious (and very beautiful) violin piece and then an Irish reel. So it's the same instrument, but is there a specific difference in the technique? Or just the style of music being played? Clearly a guy in a tuxedo will play a violin, and a guy in a checkered flannel shirt will play a fiddle, but there must be more to it than that. What?
A violin is a classical instrument.
A fiddle is a country/bluegrass instrument.
Lying on the table, they are the same instrument. It all depends on whether Charlie Daniels or Itzhak Perlman picks it up as to whether it's a fiddle or a violin.
