How do you get good at Blues Harmonica and have fun practicing at the same time?
I've started to pick up the Harmonica, but I find I get bored quite quickly practising because the songs and riffs sound cheesy and boring. Are there any methods or things to do to making practising sound good and still be productive? Also, whats the number one skill to work on while learning blues Harp?
That's great, but I'm already at a higher level than that. I'm at the point where I can bend notes on a draw and get a single note 85% of the time.
First of all, make sure you go to youtube and look for some basic harmonica lessons. I think a good source of harp lessons on youtube is Jon Gindick.
D= Draw, B=Blow. Numbers indicate which hole on the harmonica.
The "Good Morning Lick" 1D, 2B, 2D
"Up/Down Blues Lick" 3B, 3D, 4B, 4D. (up)
4D, 4B, 3D, 3B (down)
Play the lick up, then play the 4D a couple more times to build bluesy tension. Then play the lick down to resolve.
"The Train Sound" Play holes 2D, 3D, 4D, and 5D at the same time for the train's whistle. To "chug" play blow and draw chords on the lower end of the harp holes 1-3, or 2-4.
As a beginner, there's other basic licks you can learn, but I encourage you to learn to bend notes asap. The bluesy sound you want will really open up if you can bend notes (plenty of videos out there teaching this technique).
Once you can bend, and learn some basics, you can start to find your own licks.
