Guitar Review Gibson J45 True Vintage:
After its first appearance in the early 1940's, the Gibson J45 gained a lot of popularity due to it rounded shoulders, classic mustache bridge, Mahogany back and sides, and those great Red Spruce tops that give it such an incredible tone. As part of their True Vintage line of vintage guitar re-issues, Gibson decided to re-introduce the J45 back into the market and I am sure glad that they did.

The Gibson J45 True Vintage acoustic guitar is a reproduction of the J45's that were produced by the company back in the early 1940's. The True Vintage reproduction models use the same Adirondack Red Spruce tops and Mahogany back and sides as did the original J45's that were first produced. Set up with premium Gotoh tuners, you obtain very smooth tuning action for this historically accurate reproduction guitar. This guitar is nicknamed "the workhorse" because of it's simplistic beauty. If you are looking for a big-bodied acoustic guitar, with a big voice, this classic guitar will more than fill that bill.
Sound Production: 7.5 Stars
The Spruce top, coupled with the quality Mahogany back and sides of this guitar, will give you a very warm and inviting tone that is extremely pleasing. Very comparable to the Martin D-18, which was it's main competition at the time of first production. This guitar truly puts out a tone that is true to the original version of the J45.
You can tell that there is something special about the tone-production of this guitar, and that quality is improved by the hand scalloped and hand-gluing procedure that Gibson employs for the top bracing used with this guitar.
Guitar Action: 8.5
The action of this guitar was great from the moment I first picked it up. Light gauge strings would be my preference for this guitar. Because I like low action, I would probably lower the strings at both the nut and saddle a bit.
Durability: 9.0 Stars
The J45 is very well constructed and is a very solid guitar. It has a good solid feel from the moment you pick it up. The top is solid and will withstand the tension from medium gauge strings very well. But please, be sure you do not put heavy gauge strings on this guitar. When strumming the guitar, the sustain fades somewhat, but rather typical for a new guitar.
If this will be your first solid wood guitar, be sure you keep it in a carefully monitored and controlled atmosphere. In other words, a very low humidity level, for extended periods of time, can play havoc on a solid wood guitar. Solve the low humidity problem by investing in a good in-case humidifier, and supplement that with either a good in-room, or whole house humidifier. Just as the guitars that were build in the 1940's, this Gibson J45 True Vintage Special Edition guitar will not disappoint, as it is a fantastic sounding guitar that will just improve with age. Even though this guitar was originally thought of more as a rhythm guitar, it can more than stand on its own as a fantastic flatpicking guitar as well.
I am lucky enough to have one of the original J45's produced in the 1940's. And you know what? Because of the careful construction techniques of the True Vintage model, given some age, I would fully expect that the volume and tone will be even better than these original guitars. This guitar as delivered, has a nice note and outstanding balance too. If you are looking for warm rhythm tones, and rich lead tones, the Gibson J45 guitar will not disappoint you. Also, if you are into fingerstyle guitar, this guitar fills in that role with dignity as well. I love using my old '40's J45 for fingerstyle playing.
