Rock Band 2 vs Guitar Hero World Tour
Since their first Guitar Hero game release back in November 2005, Activision and RedOctane have been the top players in the music gaming industry, when just 2 years later a sort of new player stepped onto the stage, Rock Band.
Harmonix were the developers of the original two Guitar Hero games, but after completiting their second Guitar Hero game, they moved onto new publishers, MTV Games and EA, which is where they started on Rock Band. After the old developers, Harmonix left, new guys Neversoft moved in and started to create a new game, Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock, this was then released in the later part of 2007. The game proved to be a great success, until later that year Harmonix came back into the business with Rock Band. This game featured a whole new range of instruments including a guitar, drum set, bass and mic.
After a year of Rock Band being out, both publishers, Activision and EA both released a new music game into the market. Guitar Hero World Tour from Activision and Rock Band 2 from EA, let battle commence.
From Guitar Hero's view, it was a whole new game for them, they had to create a whole new range of instruments, but once they were done, it was clear that they hadn't cut any corners. Their new guitar has a brand new touch sensitive bar to allow easy finger tapping during song sections, their new drums also feature 5 pads and a foot peddle instead of the 4 pads and foot peddle on the Rock Band drums. Aswell as a new range of instruments, the new game features a music creator where you can create your very own music and then share it via the internet.
From the Rock Band 2 side, Harmonix have not changed the instrument set up much. Harmonix only made 2 changes to the drums, they made the peddle metal instead of plastic to make it stronger, they also changed the drums to velocity sensitive, basically, the harder you hit on the pads, the louder the sound you get in the game. Beside those few drum changes, Harmonix have not altered their range of instruments.
On the actual game side of things, they haven't got a music maker, however, they do have one great thing that Guitar Hero does not; a huge selection of downloadable songs on top of their 80+ song set list. This also gets better, if you have previously bought any Rock Band 1 songs, they are all compatible with Rock Band 2 and they all appear on your setlist when you load up the game. Another advantage is that for a small fee of less than $5, you can tranfser most of the songs from Rock Band 1 onto Rock Band 2.
Now that you've heard the advantages to each game, now comes the tricky part, deciding which one to get. Considering all the economic problems recently, many people will only have the money for one game, plus the only the space for one set.
With both sets of instruments compatible with either game, many people will have to make the decision whether they want a larger setlist, or the new types of features that come with Guitar Hero World Tour.
Although it's a totally open stage, it's hard to tell which game will come out on top. I personally prefer Rock Band 2 over Guitar Hero World Tour simply because of the very expandable set list and the layout of the srceen.
