Different Types Of Drums
All of us love to hear music while others are music lovers by nature. We want to try and learn how to use different musical instruments such as guitars, drums and piano. A drum is a popular instrument that belongs to the percussion group and is widely used by musicians and bands in different shows. We often see drums used in concerts and other musical events. We often dance when we hear the beat of the drum and drums play a huge part in making a party or an event livelier. It is one great beat making machine everyone loves.
There are various types of drums. Drums are often classified according to shape, material and origin. Based on the shape, there are 6 popular type of drums: Conga drums, Cylindrical, Goblet, Barrel Drum, Timpani and Waisted drum.
Conga drum which is sometimes referred to as Tumbadora or Cuban drum is a type of drum that produces fast-paced beats. This type can often be heard plating reggae and Latin music.
Cylindrical Drums generally includes side drums, bass drums and tenor drums. This drum use a percussive string and differ in sizes, large ones produce smaller pitch compared to smaller ones. Another type of drum which is Goblet drum is also popularly called in different names like Chalica drum and Darbuka. It can be seen mostly in countries near Middle East. Goblet drums are usually made of metal, wood or fiber glass and are played using both hands.
Barrel drum got its name from its barrel shape with opening at the bottom and bulge in the middle. Thailand's Taphon, India's Khol and Vietnam's Trong Chau are among the famous barrel drums. The Timpani or Kettle drum is another popular type of drum which can produce different beats by loosening or tightening the screws. A timpani stick is used to create different beats and the timpani drum got its name from the Italian word timpano which also means drum.
The last popular type of drum is the Waisted drum or sometimes called the hourglass drum. This type of drum is similar to a goblet drum but with a different shape since the top and bottom have similar size and shape. They are attached by laces to produce different beats.
