It is entirely a matter of opinion as to which are the best guitarists ever. However it is possible to identify the most influential and innovative.
As with all aspects of life, we learn from others. Gifted individuals are able to improve and add to the repertoire of knowledge. Our whole history is one of ever continuing improvement.
Occasionally along comes an individual, who, armed with the knowledge of those that went before them, are able to make a tremendous leap and introduce new methods, or apply existing methods in an entirely different way. In so doing, they change the way that future generations understand the subject for ever.
This is true of the electric guitar, and here is my view of the best electric guitarists ever.
Chuck Berry;
As were most of his generation, Chuck was influenced by the pioneering electric guitarist T Bone Walker. Berry was not a particularly gifted guitarist but he developed a distinctive style. He mimicked the sound of bottleneck guitar, and drew on the influence of the great piano players of the day and adapted their technique to the guitar. He blended country songs to his unique R&B style and the result laid the foundations of Rock and Roll. His lyrics appealed to the teenage market. His guitar solos and showmanship would be a huge influence on rock music, and 60 years after his first releases, musicians continue to mimic and cover his style and compositions.
Jimi Hendrix;
Hendrix was influenced by blues artists BB and Albert King, and soul guitarist Curtis Mayfield. He was also highly influenced by the outrageous showman little Richard. Hendrix began dressing and grew a moustache like him. Hendrix stated, "I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice.
Hendrix did more to further the development of the electric guitars than any other guitarist before him or since. He established it as a unique instrument, not simply an amplified version of the acoustic guitar. His use of feedback, coupled with tremolo (whammy bar) and electronic effects such as distortion and wah-wah would forever change the way that guitarists worked.
The effect on "pop" music was profound. He "raised the bar" and established a loud, aggressive, technically demanding skill level for rock music as a whole, significantly furthering the development of the guitar and paving the way for the next great innovator.
Eddie Van Halen
Dutch born Eddie van Halen contributed several innovations to the development of guitar technique. Building on the work of Hendrix, coupled with greater speed and dexterity, he integrated two-handed tapping; natural and artificial (pinch) harmonics, and tremolo picking. Van Halen has inspired an entire generation of guitarists. Most modern electric guitarists now incorporate these techniques in their repertoire.
