We all think about our life outside of work when we are at work. Perhaps it is what's for dinner, taking your child to swim practice, tutoring or clarinet lessons. Maybe you are getting together with friends, going dancing or have a special date. When the pressures from the classroom get to be too much sometimes it is hard to keep focused. Perhaps the end of today's work day is the start of your vacation. Woo-Hoo!
These preoccupations can drag out the day. Everyone knows that time flies when you are having fun. So why not create an atmosphere of fun during your workday. Perform what I call Random Acts of Funniness(TM) (RAF). Think of ways to use your own talents in your classroom, department or school office to stimulate camaraderie and fun at the same time.
* Wear funny hats or a clown nose and pop into the classroom next door and ask to use the phone. Wear them at the next department head meeting or faculty meeting.
* Be a guest in your own class and show up as a character you are studying.
* Have a standing ovation for people who do mundane things in the office or for students who come in late.
* Clap and sing for birthdays around their desks like they do in restaurants.
* Sing the question you are asking and have the student or person sing back.
* Sing hello when the phone rings.
* Send a funny memo on April Fool's day, assignment or quiz.
Keep the Random Acts of Funniness simple without insulting anyone or any culture. If you like, use self-deprecating humor. The best laugh is laughing at yourself. If all else fails, the whoopee cushion or laughing box always gets a laugh!
