Most people know Def Leppard for the big, bold rock anthems like 'Pour Some Sugar on Me', 'Armageddon It'..and who doesn't sing along to 'Photograph' in the car while flying down the highway? Come on! Admit it...you do it too!
But Def Leppard ballads are probably some of the strongest, best songs the band ever produced, standing along-side anything the band has created. Huge numbers like 'Hysteria' or 'Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad' are classic signature-songs. In the hands of producers like Mutt Lange, Mike Shipley and Pete Woodroffe, Leppard produced some amazing slow-burn numbers that took the band's big guitars and gritty vocals and created something smooth, strong and amazingly intimate.
One interesting trait that was unique to Leppard was that, more often that not, their huge, super-saturated guitar sound, gargantuan vocals and cannon drums were all over the 'softer' pieces like 'Love Bites', 'Bringin' On The Heartbreak' and 'Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad'. Instead of relying tinkly clean guitar sounds and neutered vocals, Def Leppard ballads tended to use trademark Lepp sounds in dynamic ways to create a 'feel' that was softer...without actually being softer.
And while most people know Def Lepp for lighter pieces like 'Hysteria', fact is, this British quintet has been creating unique ballads from day one and well after their 80s heyday.
Check out the big sounds on 'Euphoria's' 'To Be Alive' (my personal fave) or 'Goodbye' from the same album. Masterful work from a band largely known for barn-burning rock. Probably two of the best-known, post-Hysteria ballads come from the 1993 Retroactive album via the the unplugged 'Two Steps Behind' and 'Vault's soaring 'When Love and Hate Collide'.
We could go on and on. 'Love' of the recent 'Songs From the Sparkle Lounge' CD is one of the most unexpected and intricate works the band has ever produced. So the next time you hear a Def Leppard ballad, try singing along to some of the superb and inventive melodies this band crafts. They aren't just a metal-outfit... Def Lepp is one of the great ballad-makers of all time!
