Bay First

The Early Emperors of China

Chinese history remembers Suiren, Fuxi and Shennong as the Three Sage Kings. While not exactly kings, they are the leaders of their generation and are remembered today for their personal sacrifices and the many unique contributions to mankind.

The first Sage King lived about 18,000 years ago. He is best remembered for his knowledge of making fire by drilling wood. With fire on demand, mankind can eat cooked food, keep warm and use fire to wild animals at bay.

Fuxi taught people to domesticate animals and make nets to catch fish, birds and wild animals, ensuring a continuous supply of food. He also laid down marriage laws and invented a 35 string musical instrument. However most important of all, he create the Eight Trigram or Bagua which became the basis of the I Ching or Books of Changes.

Shennong alias Yandi was credited with the invention of the rake, spade, plough and sickle. He taught people how to grow five types of cereals and he formulated barter trade. He was also credited for modifying Fuxi's 35 strings musical instrument into a 5 strings one.

Shennong tried to find remedies for illnesses by tasting hundred of wild berries. His effort yielded many positive results but eventually one of these wild berries got to him and he die from it.

Huangdi, Zhuanxu, Diku, Yao and Shun succeeded The Sage Kings. They were collectively known as the Five Legendary Emperors.

Huangdi had strong management skills. He knows how to select the right people and motivate them to rule the country and to come out with innovations that benefit the people. Many great achievements were attributed to him.

He commissioned his subject to develop a written language which contributed to the growth of Chinese Culture. With another he studied the art of healing and compiled The Yellow Emperor's Medicine Classic? Yet with another he developed the 60 year cycle Jia Zi calendar that aided in farming.

During Huangdi's reign, the people experienced stability and prosperity. It ushered in an age of civilization for the Chinese people. This was mainly due to Huangdi's preference for peace and his dislike for war.

Zhuanzu was not Huangdi's son but he was chosen over Huangdi's other son because of his ability. He is best remembered for bring law and order to his people and for concentrating power within the central authority.

Like his great grandfather, Diku who succeeded Zhuanxu, was a benevolent king who took care of the interest of his people. To better manage the growing population, he created additional ministry with properly demarcated duties such as the Ministry of Land, Water, Metal Ores, Fire and Forestry. He conducted personal visits to ensure that that the country was well run.

Yao who succeeded Diku was just as industrious and benevolent as his father. His contributions included further developing the calendar and adjusting the timing of planting resulting in bumper harvests.

Shun was Yao's son in law. Although his mother died when he was very young, and his step mother and father ill-treated him, he remained filial to them. His great virtue helped him to gain fame and he was summoned to King Yao's service at 30. He eventually married King Yao's daughter.

Shun made many organizational changes. For example he divided the country into 12 states each with their own administrator. He also set the department of farming, music, rites, works, water and land. For the dukes and princes, he drafted many rules and regulations including the five rules of etiquette.

Shun was succeeded by Yu who founded the Xia Dynasty. Yu was famed for his ability to control flooding but that is another story for another time.
