Painting basics?
I'm real inexperienced when it comes to painting.
Here's my questions. First, what's the rule on primer? I got a den I need to re-paint. One of the walls is a reddish, the other 3 walls are a tan. I'm going to change the shade of red, make it a little darker and richer. Do I need to prime first? Then, I'm going to change the other walls to more of a gray. Paint the red wall last? Start with the other walls?
Then, I'm going to re-paint a bathroom. It'll go from a rose color to something else(maybe gold, I'm not sure). The ceiling is white. And there's Wainscotting on the lower half of it(it's white). I'll probably re-paint that too. Prime first? Prime the Wainscotting? Do I need to sand that Wainscotting? What type of paint for a bathroom?-- it gets pretty damp in there
Any help would be appreciated.
If the paint you are covering is glossy or real smooth then priming would be a good idea. If the walls are flat or no sheen priming isn't needed.
Using primer on shinny surfaces just helps the new paint to adhere to the existing wall. Without primer on shinny surfaces the paint will possibly peel if scratched or bumped.
If or when you prime the walls it would be best to tent the primer close to the color you are using. This step will help prevent having to use multiple coats and might save time and money.
When you pick up your primer just tell the person in the paint department what color your using and they will take care of the tint.
As for the bathroom that's another story. All brands of paint that I'm familiar with has a kitchen/bathroom paint. It wouldn't be a good idea to paint it with regular paint even if it is a top of the line paint. The Kitchen/Bathroom paint has additives which prevent mold and mildew and Teflon to help when they need to be wiped or washed off. You could use the K/B in other rooms if they will be wiped or washed frequently.
When I painted I usually started with the deeper colors first and cut into them with the lighter shades, but it shouldn't matter much which color to start with.
Good Luck with your project
