Francis Rocco Prestia has been funking it up with soul and funk band Tower of Power for the best part of 40 years now. As well as his trademark, driving 16th note syncopated bass lines Rocco Prestia is also a master of the funk shuffle. If you want to learn how to play bass to funk shuffles you can do a lot worse than learn from Rocco.
Here's a list of 5 of his best funk shuffles.
1. Credit
Credit is a half time funk shuffle. It's a serious right hand workout too for any bass player. If you have the instructional video 'Fingerstyle Funk' by Video Progressions there's a great sequence where Rocco shows how he developed this awesome groove. That sequence is well worth the price of the video progam on its own. Credit was originally on the "Power' album which was released in the late 1980's.
2. I Do My Best Work At Night
This tune - which has another great funk shuffle bass line - is not featured on a Tower of Power album. Instead this tune was featured on an album called 'The King Of Retro Cool' by The Strokeland Superband featuring Greg Walters.
The Strokeland Superband is a band put together by Tower of Power songwriter and baritone sax player Stephen 'The Funky Doctor' Kupka. Transcribing this will give you months worth of material to work on in your own quest to be a funk shuffle master!
3. This Time It's Real
This Time It's Real was featured on Tower Of Power's eponymous release in the early 70s. This is a more traditional funk shuffle - it's a great study of combining a walking kind of feel with some stuttering, staccato triplets.
4. Pocketful of Soul
Pocketful of Soul is featured on the Oakland Zone album - which marked David Garibaldi's return to the Tower of Power drum chair after a 10 years plus absence. The groove is a very modern, neo-soul style half time shuffle. The line Rocco plays on the song is a great example of the combination of his funk shuffle with his very stacato muted notes that comes from his unique left hand fretting technique.
5. Happy 'Bout that
Happy 'Bout That is also from the Oakland Zone album. This is like an updated version of This Time It's Real - it features a similar approach of walking quarter notes interspersed with staccato triplet figures. This is another tune that will keep you working for months.

Rocco Prestia is a fingerstyle funk institution, and close study of the above lines will give you some great material to assimilate into your own playing.
